Suunto M4 Men's Heart Rate Monitor plus Fitness Training Watch (Black/Silver) Reviews
21 of 22 people found the following review helpful great watch!, By bob (charlottesville VA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Suunto M4 (Sports) I recently upgraded to this watch from a 4 year old T4. I chose this watch because of its price, plus I didn't need to connect multiple Suunto devices (like a GPS pod or a step counter pod). This new M4 is VERY well designed. The button layout plus operation is very intuitive. The only thing you need to remember to do is hit the start stop button when beginning a workout. The heart rate belt has also been redesigned. It is incredibly comfortable! Even when doing sit-ups! The strap material itself is thinner, plus they incorporate well-designed metal contacts in the strap. The exercise programs are good, plus the watch tells you what you need to do for a workout every day. You need to check in with the watch fairly often to keep your heart rate within their "targets." Sometimes a 40 minute workout can drag on an additional 10 minutes if you don't keep your heart rate in the zone. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase. 19 of 22 people found the following review helpful Overpriced, By This review is from: Suunto M4 (Misc.) It does have an alarm despite the claims of one of the other reviews but there are many functions missing for a watch of this price. The menu is clunky, no reset button, no audio zone alarm (the only function I am really bothered about). The biggest bugbear I have with this is how invasive the training plans are. For example you can't set your own upper/lower heartrate threshold. As an endurance mountainbike racer my heartrate is relatively low, despite being 30 I cannot get it above 165bpm. Race pace for me over 12 or 24 hours is 125bpm. The watch tells me that I can do 30 Minutes at 138-151bpm, but I wanna do more plus just because my HR is low doesn't mean I am not working. You can switch back to "Free" Training Mode which means you can workout at whatever heart rate you want, but without a zone alarm you have to look at the damn thing, not good when I'm concentrating on the trail, nor is it any good in the dark - the backlight flashes seemingly flashes in time with your... Instead of repeating, I'll add a few personal observations. The M4 watch plus its strap are both much better constructed plus solid compared to the T3 set. While the T3 has the advantage of calculating plus tracking Training Effect (TE), I love the simplicity of the M4: clearly delineated 3-button operation vs a more obtuse 5-button arrangement on the T3, large easy-to-read numbers plus symbols vs smaller digits plus scale around the circumference of the T3, plus finally a very simple intuitive menu system. The newly designed strap also seems to hold in place better than the older version which had a tendency to slide down when I'm vertical. Operationally, this HRM also tries to be encouraging with a notification that you are 50% through your workout, plus at the end, "good workout!". Price-wise, this HRM is hard to beat! Very highly...
